Merriam-Webster Dictionary:
Entheogen (noun) : Psychoactive substance (plant or plant extract with hallucinogenic effects) that occasions an enlightening spiritual or mystical experience. Artificial as well as natural substance that induces alterations of consciousness similar to those documented for ritual ingestion of traditional shamanic inebriants, even if it is used in a secular context.
The word Entheogen was a 1979 replacement to the words hallucinogen and psychedelic. Theos was a Greek God. Entheos translates to "inspired by the Gods" which was used to praise artists and poets of ancient Greece. Genesthai means "to come into being" which translates the word Entheogen as "that which causes God to be in an individual." As it is often used to describe any sort of hallucinogenic, it is meant to refer to naturally occuring drugs used for religious purposes - not artificial drugs like LSD.
Entheogens have been used around the world for thousands of years by shamans and religious leaders as well as for medical purposes. These drugs contain psychoactive chemicals which act upon the central nervous system, altering changes in perception and consciousness.
The altered state of consciousness permits people to explore far reaches of their mind and even travel the non-physical planes without the strict disciplines of meditative techniques. Through the use of drugs such as Salvia, Ayahuasca and Iboga, the user can experience inspirations and revelations, communicate with higher beings and explore the workings of their inner self.
